Some tips for your site’s content

Friday, December 8th, 2006

Tips For Website Content - Perhaps the most important element of your website.

Having a great looking website is not very effective if the content is confusing, poorly written and/or incomplete. You have two main audiences to keep in mind:Potential Clients and Search Engines. The former is obvious but the latter is just as important. These guidelines can help you improve the visitors’ experience:

  • Search Engines love fresh, relevant content. Update your website often with articles, news and anything that pertains to your products and industry. You’ll improve your traffic and turn visitors into clients.
  • Products Section - In addition to providing a description of your product or service, highlight the benefits. Explain why your visitors need it. If possible, quantify the benefits and provide proof.
  • Establish your credibility - nobody will buy if they don’t feel comfortable with you.
  • Write each section and page with Search Engines in mind (see the section below on Search Engines). Make it easy for Search Engines to index your website in their databases.
  • Consider hiring a professional writer. A professional writer can make your website much more effective by creating coherent, enticing content. As well, most will offer to contact your clients in order to create testimonials, case studies, etc. In addition to having professionally written copy for your website, you can use the material for other marketing purposes (brochures, flyers, etc).

Why You Need Professionally Designed Web Graphics

Friday, December 15th, 2006

The days are long gone when flashing banners, cheesy animations, annoying scrolls of text and leaping pop-ups were the measure of a well designed web page. Web surfers are now much more discerning. They will only stay on a page that is appealing with its professional graphics and clean, intuitive design. This article examines the way web design has changed and what you now need to do to keep your visitors.

Someone wise once said that ‘you can’t judge a book by its cover’, but I’m guessing this was before the world wide web changed the way everyone absorbed information.

The fact of the matter is, these days, even in a hard cover bookshop, books with boring covers will never even get picked up. The competition is so fierce, the colours and design of book covers so clever, that unless a cover stands out from the crowd, a book doesn’t stand a chance of being purchased.

Now, you can multiply this scenario by hundreds of thousands of times if you are talking about web pages. The same principle applies. Unless a web page is attractive enough, it won’t get a second glance. Web surfers will be in and clicked out in the blink of an eye. Design and colours all contribute to how a web page presents itself to its visitors. There once was a time where web pages were thought to require every bell and whistle available. This was in the early days of the web when everyone was trying to prove themselves; when flashing banners were thought to be the way to go (they’re not now, if they ever were), where cutesy little animations were thought to be a brilliant addition to a web site.

Well, there was a predictable backlash against these kaleidoscopic ‘horror’ web pages of the early days, but, surprisingly you still see a few of them around – usually done by ‘newbies’. Fact is, the pendulum has now swung the other way. Clean, professional and precise is now the best approach for a web site. You don’t offer too many distractions on your site because you want your visitors to be given little choice but to go to an order button, if you’re selling, or a subscribe button, if you are recruiting. The current thinking is that you need to have a professional web page, with a professional design. All too easy to say, much harder to do. Most design programs these days have more buttons than a video parlour and take many hours to learn. Universities and colleges even run lengthy study courses on how to use some of the major design programs because they are so complicated.

But, there is an answer, if you are seeking good web design, but don’t want to pay a professional designer, nor study for months. There are now many good professionally designed graphics packs that you can purchase. There are even good royalty-free photographs that you can either purchase, or be given, on the web. Using such packs is the way to go because, if you choose wisely you will find some great professional graphics, clip art and photographs that will certainly give your web pages that professional spark that will make them stand head and shoulders above many others.

Having a collection of these packs is definitely the way to go. You store them on your hard drive and they become a valuable resource that you can go back to, again and againFind Article, picking and choosing the right graphics for whatever web design purpose you have in mind.

Generate Traffic To Your Site!!

Tuesday, December 26th, 2006

This article is a quick overview of some methods of traffic generation and their advantages and disadvantages. It is the goal of any website of the internet to get traffic to the site, to be seen.

One of the problems is the internet is now so huge that there are more pages on the internet than people on the planet. How can you get hits and a flow of traffic to your solitary page?  If your generating a page for general interest or fun without traffic your goals are not met. In the case of creating traffic for a business website it is literally a case of have traffic or have your business die. It doesn’t mattter if you have the best website, with great content, fantastic pictures, audio, video and a multimedia experience better than disneyland, if no one comes it is for naught. The internet is not like field of dreams “if you build it they will come”, no they won’t. Google has about 8 billion pages indexed on the net and its growing everyday. If you create a new site your chance of having a visitor just stumble on your site is about the same as winning the lottery. How then do we change the game so people can at least appreciate the work put into a website, or in the case of a business or affliliate website visit to make a decision to buy? The following are some of the most common methods.

Search Engine Optimisation.

Basically this means you optimise your pages with the right keywords in the right places so that the search engines index your page as having great CONTENT in relation to key search words. The simple fact of the matter is that your chance of being on page one of the most popular search terms is next to nil. You will find thanks to the American domination of the internet that the most popular searched keywords tend to be American personalities, like Oprah Winfrey, Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, etc. (Wonder why there are so many gossip magazines? The internet is no different, gossip is one of the most popular topics).  If you were to create a new website about one of these people thinking hey I will get some of that traffic for myself - I’ll do an Oprah Winfrey site, content rich, etc your chance of getting to the top is practically nil, why, firstly because you have 1000’s to millions of competitors and your chance of being optimised not only with great content but with relevant links and relevant links with the important keywords will be nil as well. All is not lost, it is possible still to create a niche website and get rated in the first page e.g. type “vegetable gardening on hard clay” into the google search engine and you will see I am rated number two and three (at least at the time of writing this article, remember nothing stays still on the net). One a blog and the other an article, probably a boring topic for most people but for gardeners a nice niche topic. Its not a university degree on the subject but the basics on the subject and it rates high because the site’s content strongly matches the search phase vegetable gardening on hard clay, type in gardening or vegetables though and the site is lost from the radar. In summary one of the first methods of traffic generation is to have a site geared to keywords and content that will draw in search engine traffic. Remember though the more competative the keywords the harder this will be to achieve. Some companies specialise in generating rich content and links from other like rich content sites targeted to high rating keywords and charge big money for the privelage 50,000, etc, why? because free traffic to websites from search engines means lots of free traffic and a big chance for profits.

Adwords and the like.

Another method of traffic generation is to buy it. Yahoo, Google, etc sell advertising space. In the case of Google adwords you can pay to have you site on the first page but this can be an expensive proposition, 1 or more a click, to mere pennies. Why do people choose this method. Firstly it brings targetted traffic to your site. The advantage of targetted traffic is these people are looking for your exact topic and thus more likely to stay on your site and it results in higher conversion rates. The problem is although Google says its rewards content rich sites with lower click costs the truth is the better ad wins, not necessarily the better or most relevant site. To explain this further, google will lower your cost of your clicks and even raise you in the list if more people are clicking through - its says it is rewarding you for having a relevant site - the truth though is its rewarding you for having a great ad that people want to click on. Advantage of this method is you are guaranteed traffic - disadvantage - its costs and takes time to tweek your ads so they work at maximum efficiency. However I know of businesses that survive on google adwords alone for advertising and make a very good turnover on their business products so it works well for them. But one again the greater demand for the keyword, the greater the number of competitors there are. There is one way to can cut this disadvantage down though, choose to limit your target audience to a particular country, region or even city. Obviously the target audience is further limited by language. Not much point in advertising your english content site in Mongolia, firstly because not many mongols speak english, but secondly because not many have internet access either. If your paying money for advertising on the internet make sure you are reaching the right audience for your ad.

Surfing Programs.

Another way to generate hits to your site is to join numerous surfing programs, like traffic swarm, instantbuzz, fast freeway, traffic pods and many more. These will generate HITS to your site. In fact you can buy thousands of hits and get them in a very short space of time but although normally cheap e.g. 9 for 1000 hits, it has a myriad of disadvantages. Firstly you are only advertising to other surf members, many of them are competitors, already in the same programs as you, not really interested in your ad. I’ve found that you can build a downline and contact list from surfing programs, however keep the ad or website display very basic. With a 15-30 second counter on most programs people just aren’t going to read a saga even if its mind blowingly good, they are going to scan and then click the letter or number required. It that 15 seconds you’ve got to grab their interest. You can do this by free offers, appealing to their needs or wants.  Often in the surfing world a single page with an e-mail enrollment form attached to be it is the best bet for getting results. One distinct advantage of most of these programs though is if you build a downline with them the amount of free traffic you get increases. You can surf for traffic at your leisure if you can’t afford to pay for it, you might even find a program that perks your interest. Also in this category can be included banners, banner exchanges, etc which work on the same principle of you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours.

If you are interested in surfing programs the link below to free traffic hits has many of the most popular.

Longer term methods.

I call these longer term methods because they require a greater work on your part, however they can result in great traffic results. One of these is article writing. Articles submitted to articles sites like goarticles, article fever, etc act as a magnet for search engines. Content rich and quality controlled if you get an article listed in one of these forums/ libraries you have the ability to have a constant stream of traffic through attached links. Why do you think I’ve written this article. To generate traffic. Yes I like helping and educating others and I do create not for profit websites and articles but most are to generate traffic. Another long term method is to contact and link to other similar sites. You can do this by requesting other webmasters to do this or create you own sites and link them to one another. Another long term method is to create an op-in e-mail list and encourage people from you list to visit your ‘great’ site with your ‘unbelievable’ offer. Creating a blog like this doesn’t hurt either. In summary I don’t reccommend any method over any other. Each has advantages and disadvantages. It can depend on what you are advertising. On the whole though I don’t think you can go wrong if you do all the above methods as a wholistic internet campaign. If you do over time your internet presence will increase as will your total traffic.

Building A Website Without HTML

Saturday, April 21st, 2007

So you want to build a website but you know nothing of HTML?

Well, that is not really a problem, but first of all; have you actually considered learning some HTML? It really isn’t very difficult and a little knowledge now could save you a big headache later on, so it might be a good idea to spend a couple of hours learning the basics of HTML even if you don’t intend to become completely fluent in the language.

Probably the easiest way to learn anything, including HTML, is by following step-by-step examples and I would heartily recommend the free online tutorials at http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp or for alternatives you could always use your favourite search engine to find the thousands of others.

If you prefer to learn from the pages of a book then a couple of recommendations you might like to check out are: “Learn HTML in a weekend” by S. Callihan, or “HTML 4 for dummies” by Ed Tittel and Mary Burmeister. There are of course many many more.

On the other hand, if you are content to stay HTML illiterate and simply want to build a web page using a WYSIWYG editor then there are some excellent Web building applications available including the obvious choices such as Dreamweaver and Frontpage. However, it can be quite expensive to invest in high end software such as this, so if you are on a budget or you just want to dip a toe in the water, then check out NVU (pronounced N-VIEW) - it is open source software and therefore completely free to download and use. You can find it at http://www.nvu.com/index.php

Finally, for the easiest way of creating a web page with no knowledge of HTML and without any further software you may find Google’s Page Creator useful. It’s not a professional solution, but it may just suit your needs perfectly. You can find it at http://pages.google.com

Of courseFeature Articles, once you have built your Website you then need to learn how to get traffic to it. But that’s a whole different story.

Good luck!

RSS Basics

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

RSS is technology - a simple software program - that allows you to access web and blog content automatically. The acronym’s most popular translation is “Really Simple Syndication. Once your browser or computer has an RSS reader on board, you can subscribe to any number of RSS “feeds.” A feed is simply a way in which a reader may subscribe to website content - most commonly blogs or news sites. A news site, for example, may list their latest headlines or entire articles in their feed every time a new article is published. A blog would publish this feed as a series of recent posts.

Affilliate Marketing For Dummies

Monday, May 28th, 2007

One of the most outstanding creations of the internet, is affiliate marketing. Only on the internet, and with affiliate marketing, can you get away with selling products which aren’t yours, not stressing yourself to deliver the said products, ignoring all the details concerning billing and cash matters, not having a care where after-sales service is concerned - and in spite of all of this, you still collect commissions worth thousands and yet remain free to roam the streets! Tell me: Where else can these happen?

Needless to mention; I know this sound great! Right? Well, let us see what the real picture is where affiliate marketing is concerned…

Affiliate marketing entails income sharing by the owner/creator of a product and you - the affiliate (or product promoter). This partnership creates an enabling environment for the merchant where he only pays for that advertisement/marketing, which produces a sale(s). On the other hand, the affiliate gains in percentage commissions on sales made through traffic that he sends the way of the merchant and on which he doesn’t have to bother with afterwards.

** How Will You Be Paid?
This is particularly dependent upon the type of affiliate program and how it is set up. This comes in two basic types: That which is operated independently by a merchant and that which the merchant employs the services of a third-party service provide to manage.

Either way, a software handles all the affiliate’s commission tracking. This is achieved by issuing each affiliate with a special unique URL, which he uses to send visitors/traffic to the merchant’s sales page. This software program then keeps perfect track of the sales which results through the affiliate link of each and every affiliate marketer and pays the commission accrued on a period-by-period basis through paypal, credit card, or checks.

** How Do You Select Products/Services?
The products or service which you choose and the figure in commission terms, will directly affect the kind of income you can expect to achieve. Therefore, extreme care is needed to ensure that you select a product or service that has the potential to bring you the kind of profit that will cover your expenses. Take particular care in choosing programs that you believe in, products/services you have used and that you like and those products you will not be ashamed of introducing your friends and family to.

Another thing worthy of note is choosing affiliate programs that offer training for their affiliates. Also, these come with already prepared and targeted graphics, text ads, solo ads, etc., etc which means that you won’t need to spend time creating your own.

Search for affiliate programs that have a commission payout percentage of not-less-than 50%. Also give a higher preference to affiliate programs having a residual income opportunity as this means that you get paid forever for a job done once!

Finally, affiliate marketing can be a highly lucrative online business. Having been around for a long time, we are just now getting to see the best coming out of the years of experience in internet affiliate marketing.

Take heed of the words above as you will need them to succeed as an affiliate marketer. Bye.

Creating Attractive Headlines

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

You have less than five seconds to capture the interest of your visitor. Unlike face to face sales where a prospect will stand poor salesmanship for etiquette sake, online the back button beckons. It is said people do not get bored in print. If a page does not deserve their attention they just flip over. Online, they click the back button; alternatively they go to the next link. When this happens, your chances of a conversion have just gone up in smokes, many times, for good.

With such a short yet critical time available to make an impression on your web visitors, effective headlines play a major role in getting results.

AIDAS, a common sales acronym that stands for Attention, Interest, Desire, Action and Satisfaction outlines key points in the sales process. The more visitors you can squeeze through this process the better your conversion rates. This far we know that prospecting involves grabbing the attention of a specific customer profile by using keywords. But as mentioned, the reason for prospecting is not just to increase web traffic, turning heads so to speak. Rather it is to successfully lead them through a persuasion process and make conversions; sales or otherwise. As such, in the short time you have a prospects attention you need to quickly turn it into interest. Gaining their interest allows you to engage them. Engagement means that the prospect is opening up for persuasion. The visitor will be thinking, let me see what they have to say.

An effective headline should be able to get attention and translate it into interest. This is done by creating a rapport. A rapport engages your prospect by harping on their immediate interest. You achieve perfect rapport when your headline identifies spot on with what your visitor is thinking when searching for the specific keyword.

For example, if a visitor is searching for a Samsung hands free accessory, the keywords “Samsung” and “hands-free” in headlines would demand their attention. The exact keyword phrase “Samsung hands-free” on the other hand would grab their attention in a snap. This is the power of keywords in a headline.

If the visitor was unsure of how exactly to go about choosing the best accessory, the headline “The Cheapest Samsung Hands-Free” may demand their attention but will only translate to reserved interest if there is no option. However the headline “How to choose the best Samsung Hand-Free” would resonate with the problem the visitor is trying to solve and consequently create a basis for a strong interest. Keywords and resonating headlines that allow engagement (rapport) create effective headlines.

Shopping Cart for your E-commerce needs

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

Shopping carts are more commonly used as a way to display physical products, products like televisions, groceries, electronic equipment, clothes, and memorabilia, etc, not digital products. Shopping carts make it easy to cross-sell and up-sell your customers once they arrive at your store. Shopping carts typically handle the shipping and handling calculation, taxes and credit card processing. A good shopping cart handles all of these efficiently and securely.

Dynamic Operation

A good shopping cart program also creates dynamic order forms on the fly as the order takes place. The shopping cart should be totally dynamic; meaning it only executes code and retrieves products, images, and product descriptions from your database when your customers request it. During the checkout process it should also calculate shipping/handling and taxes for you.

Real-Time Credit Card Processing

Powerful CGI, PHP, CFM, ASP, etc, scripting, processes commands for you on secure servers when your customers place their orders. Don’t get this confused with credit card processing. That’s mean passing of your customers’ order information from a secure form, to your merchant or payment processor, using one of the scripting languages above. Your payment processor or merchant, like PayPal, 2CheckOut, or Authorize.Net will then process the credit card. If you don’t currently have a merchant or payment processor, and you are going to be selling online, then you need one.

Usability

You can choose what options you want your customer to see. For instance, you can choose to display a search form on your shopping cart. A search form allows your customers to search your store for items by keyword or product name, etc. You can choose to display options like color, size and quantity, and even adjust the price based on the customer’s selection. These are called options. Your shopping cart should also allow you to upload images of your products as well.

Stand-Alone –Vs.- Hosted Shopping Carts

You can purchase standalone shopping cart software or services. The stand alone software, of course, requires skill and expertise to install it on your web host or on your own server. Some of the shopping cart services, although it may not seem like it at first, limit you as to what you can and cannot do. These services are most commonly offered by web hosts as a way to entice you to host your site with them. When using these types of services, remember, you’re locked into using that web host when you opt to use their shopping cart service. Your business is not portable and becomes a part of that web host. Make sure there is a simple export process that allows you to easily download your website and shopping cart if you no longer wish to use their services. The best option is to use a shopping cart that runs from your own website, independent of your web host. Both Prowebware and stand-alone shopping cart applications run from your website, giving you both control and flexib!
ility.

Choosing a shopping cart boils down to 4 things:

  1. Your Budget
  2. Your Skill-level - Do you have the expertise to edit & install scripts on your server?
  3. Desired Functionality - Want a professional results oriented system or a display case?
  4. Time - Have time to take away from your business to shape and mold a new program?

Whatever you decide, your cart should also permit you to follow-up with your customers automatically and even instantly auto-subscribe them to your mailing list.

To implement most out-of-the-box applications, you will need to know how to edit PHP, HTML, or ASP code and how to set up a MySQL database on your server for dynamic operation. Then, with some, all you need to know is how to copy/paste some simple code to your existing web pages or the template you’re using. The system should also include some type of easy help or instructions, like an HTML file or contextual help menus that walk you through setting up your new cart.
